SALT LAKE CITY - Arizona took advantage of three Utah errors as the Ute baseball team fell to the Wildcats to close out the three-game series, 5-2.
Three of Arizona's five runs were unearned as the Utes struggled on defense.
Cody Scaggari went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead Utah at the plate. Wyler Smith was 2-for-4.
Bret Helton pitched four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out one. He falls to 2-3 on the year. Tanner Banks pitched five innings in relief, striking out three and allowing one unearned run on five hits.
Arizona took a quick 2-0 lead, scoring two runs on four hits with two outs in the first inning.
The Utes got on the board in the third inning. Josh Rose led off the inning with a single to right field. After a ground out Rose scored on Scaggari's RBI double that landed just fair in right field. Davis walked to put two on with one out before a pair of fly outs stranded both runners on base.
Arizona left two runners on base in the second inning, and added two runs in the fourth after a runner reached on a two-out error, leading to a two-RBI double to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead. Arizona also stranded runners in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
The Utes left a pair of runners on base in the seventh inning after Smith hit a leadoff single up the middle and Cory Hunt walked. Rose hit a hard liner with one out, but the first baseman jumped up to snag it, and a fly out ended the inning.
Arizona added an unearned run in the eighth after the leadoff hitter reached on an error on a bunt, which led to an RBI single with two outs.
The Utes rallied in the ninth as Smith hit a leadoff single and Konnor Armijo walked with one out. Anderson hit into a routine ground ball and the shortstop overthrew first, allowing Smith to score before a fly out ended the game.
Utah continues on the road this weekend with a three-game series at USC, beginning on Friday, April 11, at 6:00 p.m. PT.
