SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team fell to No. 1 California, 10-0 (five innings), in the Utes' inaugural Pac-12 Conference home game on Thursday at Ute Field.
Utah (23-10, 0-4 Pac-12) suffered its first five-inning loss of the year as freshman Mariah Ramirez went 4.0 innings and struck out four to go with four walks in the second start of her career, and her first at home. Unfortunately, Ramirez was dealt the first loss of her career and now stands 2-1 in pitching decisions this season. Sophomore Naomi Amu pitched the fifth frame and did not allowed a hit or an earned run to go with two hits and a strikeout.
Offensively, senior third baseman Whitney Holm and left fielder Kate Dickman both recorded hits for the Utes. Holm is now on a four-game hit streak, while Dickman has 27 hits on the season, which stands third on the team.
Cal scored four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning as Cheyenne Cordes led off with a line-drive home run down the left-field line to give the Golden Bears an early edge. The Golden Bears scored another run in the third when Cordes doubled down the left-field line to begin the frame then scored after a double by Frani Echavarria. Cal tacked on five more runs in their portion of the fourth inning to set the final margin.
Holm ripped an 0-2 delivery down the right-field line in the bottom of the fourth frame for Utah's first hit of the contest.
In Utah's following at-bat, Dickman slapped a leadoff single up the middle to start the fifth inning for the Utes' second hit of the contest.
No. 1 California (34-1, 7-0 Pac-12) has won 11 consecutive games and was led by a 3-for-3, five RBI effort by Echvavarria. Jolene Henderson improved to 18-2 this season with a two-hit, seven strikeout performance in 5.0 innings in the circle for the Golden Bears.
The Utes continue their series with No. 1 California tomorrow at 4 p.m. MT. A live play-by-play call of the action as well as Gametracker live stats will be available at utahutes.com.
