PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah baseball team struggled with runners left on base in a 9-2 loss to Washington State on Friday evening.
Parker Morin went 3-for-4 at the plate while Gavin Green was 3-for-3 on the night with a stolen base. James Brooks had two hits, including his seventh home run of the season.
Utah starter Joe Pond threw three innings, striking out two and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Kesley Kondo pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits, while Nick Green threw part of the eighth inning with a strikeout.
The Utes (8-24, 4-9 Pac-12) stranded nine runners on base throughout the game, leaving runners on in every inning but the eighth and ninth innings.
WSU (17-13, 4-5 Pac-12) took a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. The Cougars put two on with one out in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single from Taylor Ard while another runner scored on a fly ball from Adam Nelubowich. WSU took advantage of a Utah error to add a run in the bottom of the second.
After leaving runners on base in both of the first two innings, the Utes got on the board in the third after an RBI single from Morin scored Brooks.
Tommy Richards hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to give Washington State a 5-1 lead. The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the seventh after Ard hit a hard infield single and scored on Ian Sagdal's single to left field, and scored three additional insurance runs in the eighth with the big hit a two-RBI single off the bat of Derek Jones.
Brooks homered in the top of the ninth inning to round out Utah's scoring.
Utah and Washington State continue on Saturday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
