BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Utah baseball team's struggles continued on Sunday, falling to UAB, 7-1, to close out the three-game series.
Although Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning by taking advantage of a pair of UAB errors and allowing James Brooks to score, the Blazers took advantage of Ute pitching mistakes to score three runs in the bottom of the inning.
UAB continued to pull ahead as the game continued, adding solo runs in the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.
Utah stranded eight on the base paths, including loading the bases with no outs in the second inning. Jo Jo Sharrar and Josh Alexander led off the fourth inning with back-to-back base hits and Parker Morin and Trey Nielsen each had hits in the eighth inning, but all were left on the bases.
Sharrar went 2-for-4 to lead Utah at the plate.
On the mound, Ute starter Ben Mordini earned the loss, going to 0-3 on the year after exiting in the first inning. Josh Chapman struck out two and allowed two runs on four hits over three innings. Tony Vocca and Nick Green pitched 2 1/3 innings each, while Mitch Watrous threw to one batter to close out the eighth.
"We didn't hit or pitch very well today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We had some opportunities to score early but couldn't capitalize, and on the mound we gave up too many free bases."
Utah heads to California next weekend, taking on Santa Clara, Lehigh, San Jose State and Columbia at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament.
