Utah State, UNLV and San Diego State Game Notes ![]()
The University of Utah softball team is in the midst of its best stretch of the 2011 season. The Utes are tied for first place in the Mountain West Conference standings with a 5-1 record in league play and have won four straight games and 12 of their last 13.
The Utes are now 10 games above .500 with a 27-17 overall record after going 3-0 at home against Colorado State and New Mexico last weekend. Utah improved its record to 9-1 within the friendly confines of Ute Field in 2011.
Utah looks to continue its winning ways in four games this week, beginning Tuesday at Utah State in its final non-conference matchup of the 2011 season. First pitch from Logan's LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field is set for 3 p.m. MT. Utah returns to Ute Field for three MWC games. The Utes take on UNLV Thursday at 4 p.m. MT and then face San Diego State on Friday at 4 p.m. MT and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will be televised live on The Mtn. (DirecTV - Ch. 616, Comcast - Ch. 37) with Anne Marie Anderson providing the play-by-play and Tracy Warren as the analyst.
Utes Take 12 of 13: During the Utes current hot streak, they have won 12 of their last 13 games. Utah has outscored its opponents 99-35 and outhit them .351 to .242. Utah also boasts a .618 slugging percentage and .448 on-base percentage. Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) is hitting .410 during the stretch with two homers and six RBI.
300 And Counting: Utah head coach Amy Hogue broke the 300 overall win barrier with Saturday's 12-9 win over New Mexico. Hogue now boasts 300-186 (.617) career record after turning in a 197-82 (.706) mark in five seasons at Salt Lake Community College.
Holm Again: Junior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) went 6-for-10 at the plate to go with five RBI and five runs scored during Utah's first home week of MWC play. She also posted a .636 on-base percentage as well as a .600 slugging percentage. In the field, she recorded a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage at third base for the Utes. Holm is the team leader with 30 runs driven in this season. She stands sixth in the conference's overall statistics and her 10 runs batted in during league play stands third. Holm is fourth in league play with a .474 batting average.
Designated Parker: Senior designated player Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah) went 4-for-4 with three home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored during Utah's first week of home games against MWC opponents. She compiled a 3.250% slugging percentage with 13 total bases in four at-bats. Parker hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the first frame of Thursday's 15-4 six-inning victory over Colorado State.
Nielson Rating: Junior Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) was awarded the decision in all three of Utah's wins last week. She accumulated a 3.77 ERA in 13.0 innings and allowed seven earned runs on 13 hits. Nielson struck out 13 while only walking four. Colorado State and New Mexico hitters totaled a meager .255 average against her. Nielson is ranked among the top 10 in five other categories of the MWC's overall statistical rankings. She leads the league with 178 strikeouts, stands second with 49 batters stuck out looking, third in innings pitched (15.41), sixth in opponent batting average (.238), and is seventh in ERA (3.13).
Offensive Explosion: During their current four-game win streak, the Utes have outscored their opponents 49-14 in their last four games. Despite having their series against BYU postponed, Utah leads the league with 53 runs scored during league play.
After tallying 35 runs in three games against Colorado State and New Mexico, the Utah offense is second in the MWC with 252 runs scored this season. As a result, the Utes are tied for the MWC lead with 223 RBI.
