SALT LAKE CITY - Big innings lifted the Utah baseball team to a 15-6 victory over BYU on Saturday afternoon, taking the rubber match of the series.
With Utah up 2-1 after three innings, Cody Guymon walked with the bases loaded to send in the first run of the fourth inning before Trey Nielsen's three-RBI double swung the momentum firmly in the Utes direction for a 6-1 lead.
Although Andrew Law homered in the fifth for BYU, the Utes continued to pull away in the bottom of the inning with three runs to go up 9-2. Gavin Green and James Brooks each scored on fly ball outs and Guymon drove in Michael Beltran for a run in the inning.
BYU cut into the lead over the next two innings. The Cougars sent two across the plate in the sixth with the help from Ryan Bernal's triple. Bernal also scored a run in the seventh after leading off the inning with a single, putting the Utah lead at 9-5.
The Utes put the game out of reach with a six-run eighth inning for a 15-5 lead. Guymon led off the inning with a single to center and pinch-runner Cory Hunt scored on Jo Jo Sharrar's first home run of the season, a shot to left field. Utah kept it going with an RBI single from Beltran before Cron drove one over the right field fence for a three-run home run, his fifth of the season.
Although pinch-hitter Dillon Robinson hit a home run to lead off the ninth inning, reliever Kesley Kondo got three strikeouts to end the game for the Utes.
"We had big hits with runners on base today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Trey's hit was big, and the game was still in the balance when Jo Jo and C.J. hit their home runs."
Brock Duke earned his second win of the season on the mound, pitching five innings and striking out seven. Ben Mordini and Joe Pond also pitched.
"BYU's offense is really good, and Brock did a nice job keeping runs off the board," Kinneberg said. "As a staff we walked to many but we made pitches when we needed to."
BYU's Bernal, Austin Hall and Law each had two hits. Pitcher Matthew Neil earned the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season.
Utah has a quick turnaround, with Southern Utah coming in for a two-game series on Monday and Tuesday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
