Utes Struggle Early Against San Jose State, Fall 8-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State jumped out to an early lead from which the Utah baseball team couldn't recover from, as the Utes fell to the Spartans, 8-3, on Saturday night.
The Spartans got to Utah pitcher Joe Pond early, scoring five runs on seven hits through the first two innings. Stephen Streich entered in the third and cooled the SJSU bats, striking out the first three batters he faced.
San Jose State added a run in the top of the sixth with Jacob Valdez taking advantage of two runners on after an error and a HBP to drive in a run. However, the Utes came back in the bottom of the sixth to send two across the plate on three hits in the inning. James Brooks singled up the middle to start the inning while Michael Beltran walked. C.J. Cron drove in Utah's first run of the game with a double and Cody Guymon also had an RBI single in the inning, putting the score at 6-2.
Both teams left two runners on base in the seventh inning before each team scored in the eighth. SJSU added two runs in the top of the inning on two hits and two errors, while the Utes had doubles from Guymon and Jo Jo Sharrar to send in a run as the Spartans continued to hold the lead, 8-3.
Each team left the bases loaded in the ninth.
Streich pitched through the eighth inning, allowing three hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts. Nick Green, Kesley Kondo and Luke West also saw action on the mound.
Guymon led Utah with four hits while Cron had three hits. SJSU only had two more hits than the Utes, 14-12, but errors were the difference in the game, with Utah making three compared to none for the Spartans.
"It was a disjointed game for us," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Joe Pond wasn't very sharp tonight, and we make an error in the second inning and all of a sudden it's 5-0 and we've only hit once. The one real bright spot was Stephen Streich. His effort was outstanding."
Utah closes out the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Sunday against Santa Clara at 11:00 a.m. The Utes defeated the Broncos, 5-3, on Friday.
