SALT LAKE CITY - Arkansas broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Utah baseball team on Friday afternoon, 3-2.
Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a player was hit by the pitch and an error, before Utah broke through to take a 2-0 lead in the sixth. With two outs, James Brooks, Michael Beltran and C.J. Cron hit three-straight singles, with Cron sending Brooks home for Utah's first run of the game. After an Arkansas pitching change, Shaun Cooper singled to center field to score Beltran before Cody Guymon grounded out to end the inning.
Kyle Robinson led off the bottom of the sixth inning for Arkansas with a triple and scored on a ground out to tie the game at 2-2.
Bo Bigham had the game-winning RBI for Arkansas in the bottom of the eighth after Matt Reynolds walked to lead off the inning and Robinson laid down a bunt to move him into scoring position.
The Utes left runners on base in both the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Utah starter Rick Anton had another solid outing, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts over six innings. Ben Mordini entered in the eighth and took the loss, giving up one hit and one run with three strikeouts.
"We're playing very well, but we're not getting the little things done to ultimately win a tight ball game or beat a really good team," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We made some base running mistakes today. Rick Anton pitched great again and Ben Mordini really pitched great. We just need to play more. We need more experience. We'll keep grinding through it."
Utah out-hit the Razorbacks, 6-5. Brooks led Utah with two hits in the game.
Utah and Arkansas continue with the second of their three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1:00 p.m. CT.
