OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah swimming and diving team continues to alter the all-time school record books on the third day of the Mountain West Conference Championships.
"We broke three school records today, so that was pretty awesome," said head coach Greg Winslow. "The guys broke a 200 free record that was 19 years old, which is older than some of the guys on the relay."
As of Friday evening, both Ute men and women squads stand at fifth place in the rankings with 315 and 333 points, respectively. The UNLV men passed BYU to take the lead in the rankings while San Diego State continues to lead the women's chart.
Garret Beaman, Brent Murray, Karson Applin, and Bjorn Gunnarsson finished second in the 200 free relay with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:20.08. Their time beat the 19-year old school record by a little less than a second.
Eric Bonicelli swam a personal best and the seventh-fastest time ever by a Ute to earn eighth in the 400 IM (3:59.70). Eric Murray and Major Robinson also placed 14th and 16th, respectively (3:59.88 and 4:02.57).
In the 100 fly, Applin placed fifth with a personal best and an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 48.21 for the second-fastest time in the event by a Ute. Andy Lamb swam a lifetime best of 50.11 to place 17th in the preliminaries of the 100 fly as well.
Beaman touched in the sixth-fastest time in school history to take fourth place in the 200 free (1:38.44). Brent Murray placed ninth with the fifth-fastest time in Ute history for another lifetime best (1:38.32).
Robinson touched in a 10th-place finish in the 100 back (50.19) which is the fourth-fastest time in Ute history. Austin Fiascone swam a personal best when he placed 19th in the preliminaries (51.24).
Garrett Peterson finished in seventh place in the 100 breast with a lifetime best and an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 55.31. It is also the second-fastest time in school history. Swimming the fifth-fastest time in the school record books, Applin placed 12th (55.97). Corey Williams and Tim Leonhart rounded out 15th and 16th place with personal best times, respectively (57.23 and 57.90).
The women kicked off the third day of competition by breaking a school record. The second-place 200 free relay consisted of Kristina Evans, Samantha Zuch, Natalie Edge, and Traycie Swartz (1:31.16). The four women touched in an NCAA "B" qualifying time to break the previous school record which was set in 2009.
Hannah Caron won the MWC title in the 100 fly for the second year in a row to earn the Utes' third consecutive win in the event. She touched in an NCAA "B" cut time of 52.95 which is the second-fastest time in school history and a lifetime best for the junior. Sarah Boylen also swam a personal best time in the 100 fly preliminaries where she placed 17th (56.21).
Maiya Otsuka broke the school record in the 400 IM by two seconds. She placed ninth, touching in an NCAA "B" cut time and a personal best as well (4:19.63). Jana Willsey, who finished 12th, swam the fourth-fastest time in school history (4:26.28) while Kayla Buck swam the ninth-fastest when she placed 20th in the preliminaries (4:32.61).
In the 100 back, Swartz finished in fourth place with a NCAA "B" cut time of 54.35. Alyssa Woodliff posted the 10th-fastest time in Ute history when she placed 25th in the preliminaries (58.21).
Zuch finished in sixth place, swimming the third-fastest time by a Ute woman, in the 200 free (1:49.81) while Edge finished eighth (1:50.64). Danielle Caldwell rounded out 16th place in the finals as well (1:52.93).
On the platform dive, Kwan Ling Yu earned the Utes' third victory at championships with a winning finals score of 239.95. This is the second time Yu has won the platform dive at MWC Championships in her collegiate career. Ellis Walters totaled a score of 224.10 to earn fourth place.
"Tomorrow is a big day for us," Winslow said. "This is when you can really focus on your team. Races races are heating up. You want to come together on that last day and we're ready."
Saturday will be the last day of competition for the MWC Championships with preliminaries at 10 a.m. CT and finals at 6:15 p.m. CT.
