MINNEAPOLIS - Four University of Utah divers kicked off the first day of the NCAA Zone E Regional Diving Championships at the Minnesota Aquatics Center on Thursday.
"I'm very happy with how we dived today," said Utah diving coach Richard Marschner. "Ellis [Walters] and Brandon [Stoppelmoor] both made it to the finals, which they didn't do last year. They both have made tremendous improvements throughout this year."
Ellis Walters, Brandon Stoppelmoor, and Nelson Foo all showed marked improvements from their performances at the 2010 NCAA Regional Diving Championships last season.
Finishing in 16th place in the 3-meter dive, Walters tallied a finals score of 278.8 which is approximately 36 points higher than her score last year (532.30 overall). Among Pac-10 competitors, Walters placed ninth.
"Ellis is just a couple of dives away from really competing for a spot at the NCAA's and I think she will be right up there next year," Marschner stated.
Kwan Ling Yu placed 35th in the preliminaries of the 3-meter dive but did not qualify for finals (225.45).
Stoppelmoor led the Utah men in the 1-meter dive when he qualified for the final round and finished 18th overall (513.15). Both of Stoppelmoor's scores in the preliminary and final rounds excelled his performance last year by 55 points (256.25) .
Foo barely missed the cut for the finals in the 1-meter dive where he placed 19th (248.30).
"It was a great first day of competition," said Marschner. "We will only get stronger as the meet goes in the second and third days."
The NCAA Zone E Diving Regional Championships continue on Friday morning at 11 a.m. CT.
