FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Seniors
Elias Petersen and
Kathryn Grant made finals on platform and the 3-meter springboard, respectively, to lead the way for the Utah diving program on the second day of the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships.
Grant secured Utah's highest placement of the day, finishing in 10th place on 3-meter with a 564.10 total. The senior sat in 13th after prelims with a 277.15 total but averaged 47.825 on her six dives in finals, including three that scored over 52 points, to move up the leaderboard.
With her performance, Grant added 3-meter to her event schedule at the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships in Atlanta later this month.
"Kathryn fought really hard today and earned herself another event at NCAAs on 3-meter," head coach
Richard Marschner said. "She stayed steady throughout the whole competition and did what she needed to do to get the job done.
Cierra Cole just missed out on a spot in finals, finishing prelims in 19th place with a 261.35 total. Her fellow freshman
Annalise Shrader scored a 244.35, while
Callie Eaglestone – the NCAA Zone champion on the 1-meter board – logged a 232.65 to round out the women's lineup.
"It was great for Annalise and Cierra to get into the meet," Marschner said. "They both outperformed their seed, so to speak, so very happy with how they performed. Cierra was just out of finals by one place, but good to see them get experience and get used to this meet."
Petersen was the only Utah man to advance out of qualifying on platform, placing 14th in the early session with a 314.70 list total. He finished finals in 17th place with a 570.90, averaging 42.70 points per dive in the second session of the day.
"Elias had a great effort," Marschner added. "Tower isn't his number-one event but he gave it everything he had today. I'm really happy he put himself out there and gave it a try."
Alex Just scored a 282.50 in prelims, finishing 21st to just miss the cut into finals, and
Attila Bernatsky logged a 272.45 to place 25th.
