SALT LAKE CITY - Despite a late rally that led to a fast and furious ending, the Utah women's basketball team fell to in-state rival Brigham Young, 61-58, on Saturday afternoon.
BYU held a slight advantage for most of the game, pulling away by as many as 14 points in the second half. With the Cougars up 56-43 with five minutes remaining, Michelle Plouffe started a 9-0 run with a jumper. Janita Badon scored the next seven points of the run, which also saw blocks from Michelle Harrison and Diana Rolniak in the span. Badon capped the run with a steal and was fouled on the play, hitting both of her free throws to cut BYU's lead to four, 56-52, with two minutes left.
After a pair of Utah timeouts, Coriann Fraughton made a three-pointer in an attempt to halt Utah's momentum, but Iwalani Rodrigues turned around and made her own three at the other end of the floor to keep things going for the Utes.
Utah fouled Jazmine Foreman with a minute left on BYU's possession, and she made a pair of free throws to increase the Cougar lead to six. Rodrigues quickly made another three for Utah to put the score at 61-58 with 41 seconds left.
BYU's shot at the other end of the floor was blocked by Plouffe with 10 seconds remaining. Utah quickly got back down the floor but was unable to get open, and Plouffe's desperation three at the buzzer was off the mark.
Utah ended the game on a 15-5 run over the final five minutes.
Plouffe led the Utes with 21 points while Badon had her sixth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rodrigues was also in double figures with 10 points and Harrison tied for the team lead with 10 rebounds.
BYU was led by 20 points and eight rebounds from Fraughton.
BYU held the upper hand for most of the game, leading 28-23 at halftime. Utah stayed within shouting distance and the size of the Cougar lead went up and down continuously.
The Cougars had dominated their most recent opponents, and had not played a game decided by single digits since falling to TCU on Jan. 19, 54-51.
Utah wore purple warm-ups before the game in support of BYU player Alexis Kaufusi, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Utah travels to Laramie, Wyoming, to face the Cowgirls in their next game, Wednesday, Feb. 16.
