LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Utah women's basketball team suffered another heartbreaking loss on Wednesday evening, falling to Wyoming, 59-50.
Utah has dropped its last three games, all by a single-digit margin.
The Cowgirls held a slim lead through most of the game, and were able to fend off several Ute rallies that closed in on that lead. Each time the Utes would bring the lead within a basket, Wyoming rallied to pull back ahead.
Iwalani Rodrigues led Utah with 21 points. Michelle Harrison had a team-high 11 rebounds.
"I am really proud of how hard we competed tonight," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "We continue to improve and I firmly believe that come tournament time this team will be playing its best basketball."
Utah played solid defense early, going up by five points in the first six minutes, 9-4, with five of those points coming from Rodrigues. Wyoming, which was forced into using the full shot clock several times in the early minutes, quickly rallied to go on a 6-0 run to tie it at 9-9.
Utah held a two-point lead, 15-13 with eight minutes left in the first half, before Wyoming took a seven-point lead with a 10-1 run over the next 4:30, 23-16. However, the Utes turned around and put together a 7-0 run to again tie the game, 23-23, with two minutes left. Rodrigues had five points of the run while Janita Badon also made a jumper in the span.
The Cowgirls rallied to end the half with five-straight points to hold a 28-23 lead at halftime. The score was tied five times in the first half. Rodrigues led Utah with 10 points at halftime.
Rodrigues and Badon quickly scored to open the second half and cut the lead to one, 28-27. After back-to-back three's from Wyoming's Hillary Carlson and Rodrigues, Carlson hit two free throws to start a 6-0 Cowgirl run for a seven-point Wyoming lead, 37-30 with 15:30 remaining.
Utah looked to get back on track with a jumper from Harrison and a three-pointer from Rodrigues to again cut the lead back down to two, 37-35 with 14 minutes left, but Wyoming turned around for five-straight points of their own to push the lead right back up.
Although Utah cut the lead to five on several occasions as the clock ticked down, Wyoming's free throws in the final minutes helped them clinch the win after both teams struggled from the floor in the final three minutes.
Wyoming went 20-for-21 from the free-throw line in the game and 12-for-13 in the second half. Utah was hampered by fouls for most of the night, with Harrison and Michelle Plouffe in foul trouble early.
Three players scored in double figures for Wyoming, led by 12 points and 10 rebounds from Aubrey Vandiver.
