BOZEMAN, Mont. - Led by Nikki Dotter's 13th-place finish, the University of Utah cross country team finished fifth overall Saturday at the three-mile Montana State Bobcat Invitational.
Utah finished fifth overall with 131 points, just above Montana State who finished with 154 points. The overall winner of the meet was the University of Montana.
"We ran a lot better here than we did a year ago," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Over the last 1,000 meters of the course, Rebekah Winterton, Alexis Laws, and Dotter combined to gain 12 spots."
The Utes had four of their five scoring runners finish within 20 seconds of one another.
In only her second cross country race, Dotter was the first Ute to finish, and placed 13th overall after clocking a 17:52. Closely behind Dotter was sophomore Jenny McCune, who finished 15th and improved on her time from last year's meet by 16 seconds, with a time of 18:00.0. Following McCune with a time of 18:04 was Winterton, who took 18th place. Laws crossed the line for 23rd with a time of 18:12, which gave Utah four top-25 finishers at the meet.
Sophomore Chantel Hunt rounded out the top-five finishers for Utah, clocking a 20:20 for 77th place. Utah's Brooke Casagranda finished shortly after with a time of 21:03 [94th overall]. Unfortunately for the Utes, freshman AuraLea Fain did not finish the race because of a strained calf muscle.
Kepler's Thoughts
"Overall I was very pleased with how we did. We have made progress from two weeks ago. Gaining those 12 spots at the end shows that we are improving. We ran faster here [at Montana State] than we did a year ago, especially our freshmen," said Kepler.
The Utes will be back in action next week at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
