Palo Alto, Calif. - Led by sophomore Amanda Mergaert's 18th-place finish, the University of Utah cross country team finished 10th overall, Saturday at the Stanford Invitational (6k).
"Overall, I was pleased with our effort today," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "I was impressed by Mergaerts performance to start her season."
In her 2010 cross country season debut, Mergaert finished first for Utah and 18th overall with a time of 21:19.
The second Utah runner to cross the line was Jenny McCune with a time of 22:20 for 54th overall. Nikki Dotter finished shortly later for 70th place (22:39). Freshman Rebekah Winterton completed the course in 22:41 for 73rd. Rounding out the top-5 finishers for the Utes was freshman Alexis Laws with a time of 23:00 for 92nd place. In her first race of the season, Megan Combe finished with a time of 23:23 (108th). The final Utah runner to complete the course was AuraLea Fain with a time of 23:31(115th).
The average finishing time for the Utah runners was 14 seconds faster than the last time the Ute women ran at Stanford in 2008 when they placed sixth as a team. .
Kepler's Thoughts
"I thought we ran hard today. We were not very aggressive at the start but we finished strong which is a good sign knowing how young our team is. We have a young group that responds to challenges."
The Utes will continue their season next Saturday at the Nevada Invitational in Reno, Nevada.
