SAN DIEGO - C.J. Cron had two hits to lead the Utah baseball team as the Utes fell to TCU in the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening, 13-2.
Utah will turn around quickly, taking on Brigham Young at 11:00 a.m. PT on Thursday morning. The winning team in that game will turn around to face New Mexico at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be televised on The Mtn. with audio available at UtahUtes.com.
TCU, ranked sixth in the country and seeded first in the tournament, took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Matt Curry walked with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game before Taylor Featherston's RBI single up the middle sent in another run. Jantzen Witte had the big hit of the inning, a two-RBI single up the middle. The Horned Frogs increased their lead to 6-0 in the third inning on a two-run home run from Aaron Schultz.
Utah attempted to get something going in the top of the fourth. Cron and Nik Gumeson led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but TCU pitcher Matt Purke struck out the next three batters to end the threat and get out of the inning.
Purke rolled most of the game, pitching seven innings with 14 strikeouts. He raises his record to 12-0 on the year.
TCU added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking a 10-0 lead. Jason Coats hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the inning.
Utah got on the board in the top of the sixth. Nick Kuroczko led off the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Cron drove in the Utes first run of the game with a single to right field. After Gumeson struck out, Jo Jo Sharrar walked and Rick Cornu reached on a catchers interference to load up the bases. A failed pickoff attempt on a bad throw allowed Cron to come home, putting the score at 10-2.
TCU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 13-2 lead. Pinch hitter Kyle VonTungelen hit a two-RBI triple to center field for the big hit of the inning.
On the mound, Jordan Whatcott pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing 10 runs to fall to 5-9 on the season. Blake Golding pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
