PROVO, Utah - With three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brigham Young erased a 4-3 deficit to down the Utah baseball team, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The contest was back-and-forth most of the way. Utah broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth inning with Nik Gumeson scoring on a two-out RBI single by Michael Beltran, giving the Utes a 4-3 lead.

The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning. Austin Hall led off the inning with a single and scored on Bryce Ayoso's two-out single up the middle after stealing second, tying the game. Alex Wolfe ended the game with a two-run home run to left field.

Zach Adams earned the loss for the Utes after pitching the final 2.1 innings. He had four strikeouts.

Both teams struggled with timely hitting throughout the day. Utah left eight runners on base while BYU stranded seven.

The Utes struck first in the game on an RBI double by Beltran in the second inning. BYU took the lead in the bottom of the frame, 2-1, as Chase Frampton had an RBI single with two on base and Austin Hall had an RBI ground out.

After a strong third inning on defense for the Utes in which a BYU runner was thrown out at home, the score remained 2-1 until Gumeson hit a two-run home run over the right field fence in the sixth inning, giving Utah a 3-2 lead. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run from Stephen Wells.

Gumeson and Beltran each had two hits and two RBI. C.J. Cron, Mark Moorman and Jo Jo Sharrar also all had two hits on the day.

Utah starter Bryn Card pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three.

Utah returns to the field on Friday, April 30, to begin a three-game series against TCU. The Utes will face the 11th-ranked Horned Frogs in Ogden at Lindquist Field.
