SAN DIEGO - San Diego State broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Utah baseball team, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Nick Kuroczko had an RBI single up the middle after Rick Cornu singled to reach base and advanced on a passed ball. Ryan O'Sullivan countered in the bottom of the inning for SDSU with an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1.
Utah loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning, but didn't break through on the scoreboard until the fourth, with C.J. Cron leading off the inning with a home run to left field. Mark Moorman continued things with two outs, singling through the right side before Zach Jones also singled and Cooper Blanc drove in Moorman with a single to right field, putting the Utes up 3-1.
SDSU left two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings before Matt Parker tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out, two-run home run.
Each team stranded a runner on base in the seventh, while the Utes also put two on in the top of the eight. The Aztecs loaded the bases on a single and two walks (one intentional) in the bottom of the eighth inning before O'Sullivan scored on a ground out to give SDSU a 4-3 lead.
Utah left the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
Cron and Blanc each had two hits to lead Utah at the plate.
Brock Duke, who entered in the eighth inning, earned the loss on the mound. He falls to 0-1 on the year. Ute starter Rick Anton pitched seven innings, striking out six and allowing three runs and just two walks.
Utah and San Diego State continue on Sunday with game three of the series, beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT.
