SALT LAKE CITY - Three Utah pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts as the Utah baseball team defeated Utah Valley, 5-3, in Orem on Tuesday evening.
Utah took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Nick Kuroczko walked with two outs before C.J. Cron hit a two-run home run to deep center field to put the Utes on the board. Nik Gumeson and Jo Jo Sharrar also singled, with Gumeson scoring on a rundown play on Sharrar.
Utah Valley left two runners on in the fourth while the Utes left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning. The Wolverines broke through in the fifth inning with two runs on three hits to cut the lead to 3-2. Sage Thorpe had a two-RBI single in the inning with the bases loaded.
The Utes would not be outdone, rallying back in the top of the sixth to score two runs and take a 5-2 lead. Gumeson led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field to start the scoring. Sharrar and Kevin Hussey also singled before Tyler Wagner laid down a bunt for a single. The throw to first on the play was wild, allowing Sharrar to come around and score Utah's second run of the inning.
Utah Valley cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Goose Kallunki.
Utah starter Andrew Wilding pitched 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He had a season-high seven strikeouts on the night, picking up his third win of the year.
Zach Adams entered on the mound in the sixth, striking out six batters over 2.1 innings. Brock Duke entered in the ninth and struck out two of the three batters he faced to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Sharrar led Utah at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Gumeson and Wagner also had two hits each.
"They are one of the better offensive clubs that we've seen all year, and we pitched really well to win tonight," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "All three guys pitched great. Andrew battled and really competed and Adams came in in a crucial situation and got some big strikeouts. Brock also pitched great.
"The three early runs got our offense going, but we had chances to score a lot more runs and we really have to pick it up."
The Utes also snapped a 24-game hitting streak by Utah Valley's Chris Benson.
The Utes go on the road this weekend for a three-game series at San Diego State, beginning on Friday, April 16.
