SALT LAKE CITY - Despite four hits from C.J. Cron, the Utah baseball team dropped its second-straight game to Utah Valley, 10-8 on Tuesday evening at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
With the score tied 8-8, Utah Valley scored two runs off four-straight hits to lead off the eighth inning and take a 10-8 lead.
The Utes left runners on base in the eighth and the ninth innings.
"I have no problem with the way we played tonight," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "They had a big inning, and if we make a play we get out of it. Utah Valley is a good club offensively - as good as we've seen all year. I'm disappointed we lost but we have bigger fish to fry this weekend."
Utah took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nik Gumeson had a two-RBI triple to deep center field to lead the Utes.
Utah Valley came back in the top of the third inning, scoring six runs, four of which were unearned. Three runs came off of a three-run home run from Jace Brinkerhoff.
Cron cut the lead to 6-5 with a two-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the third.
The Wolverines increased their lead to 7-5 with a run in the fifth after an RBI single by Kevin Arendse before Gumeson tied the game at 7-7 with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.
Each team scored a run in the sixth inning before Utah Valley pulled ahead in the eighth.
Gumeson had two hits and four RBI for the Utes, while Tyler Yagi also had a pair of hits.
Utah starter Andrew Wilding gave up nine hits over five innings. He allowed just two earned runs and had a strikeout. Zach Adams pitched half an inning and earned the loss. Brock Duke pitched the final 1.1 innings and had two strikeouts.
Austin Heaps was 4-for-4 to lead UVU, while Brinkerhoff had five RBI on a 3-for-3 night.
The Utes return to the field on Thursday, April 1, to begin a three-game series against Air Force.
