FULLERTON, Calif. - Leadoff hitter Brooke Olson went 4-for-5 at the plate, senior center fielder Kara Foster drove in four runs and junior right-hander Brittany Parker claimed her second win of the season as the University of Utah softball team claimed a 12-2 victory over San Jose State Sunday during the final day of the Judi Garman Classic.
Utah (12-13) scored a season-high 12 runs en route to their second victory of the season over SJSU.
The Utes outscored San Jose State 20-2 in two games this season, including an 8-0 win over the Spartans in the season opener on Feb. 12 at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah.
Three Utes posted multiple-hit games, led by Olson who also had two RBI and scored two runs in addition to her four hits. Foster went 2-for-5 at the plate and also scored three runs. Junior Jasey Jensen had two hits in three at-bats and also drove in two runs.
Parker registered her 11th career complete, going seven innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The Murray, Utah native improved to 2-3 this season.
In the first inning, Jensen stepped to the plate with runners on first and second base with two outs then delivered a two-RBI single to center field to open the scoring. Utah has now scored in the first inning 18 times this season and has been the first team to score in 17 of its 25 games this season.
The Utes tacked on another run in the second inning when Kelsi Hoopiiaina slapped an RBI single over the shortstop to knock Tia Palauni in for their third run of the game.
Palauni then led off the fourth inning by reaching on a throwing error by the SJSU shortstop and eventually scored on an RBI single by Olson.
Foster led off the fifth inning with a single and Holm reached on another throwing error by the SJSU pitcher. They were both drove across the plate after Hannah Clements looped a two-run double to left-center field.
Utah capped the win with six insurance runs off three hits in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Foster. She increased her school-record home run total to 57 and is now tied for the team lead with four this season.
The Utes continue their spring break trip by facing UC Riverside in a road doubleheader Tuesday at 12 p.m. PT.
