ALBUQUERQUE - Led by 17 points from Taryn Wicijowski, the Utah women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game in The Pit against New Mexico, 52-49.
Games between the two teams have been known as hard-fought, close affairs for years. The last nine games have been decided by less than 10 points.
Utah took a 6-0 lead at the onset before UNM scored its first points of the game at the 16:36 mark. Although the Lobos would go on to take as much as a seven-point lead late in the first half, the Utes battled to close that lead to a point by halftime. Wicijowski started the comeback with 1:50 left with a layup while Halie Sawyer hit two free throws.
Kalee Whipple's three-point basket with 35 seconds left tied the game for the sixth time in the half. She pulled the Utes ahead after being fouled on a second three-point attempt with six seconds left and making all three free throws. Geronika Jackson pulled the Lobos back in front with a four-point play with less than a second remaining to give New Mexico a 32-31 halftime lead.
New Mexico again had a slow start early in the first half, allowing Utah to take a four-point lead behind Rachel Messer's three-pointer and Sawyer's layup before the Lobos got back in the game. The contest went back-and-forth in a low-scoring second half. Overall, the contest was tied 13 times with the lead changing hands eight times.
With the score tied at 45-45 with 7:40 left, the Utes held the Lobos scoreless for the next 5:25 while taking a four-point lead over the span, 49-45, with a layup from Wicijowski and free-throw shots from Janita Badon and Whipple. Lauren Taylor brought New Mexico back within two with 2:15 remaining with a pair of free throws and Eileen Weissman tied the game at 49-49 with 0:54 left with a layup.
It was starting to look like the Utes would play their second-straight overtime game before Wicijowski was fouled with 38 seconds left. She hit one of two free throws to give the Utes the lead, and New Mexico took the ball back on the rebound. Jessica Kielpinski missed a jumper for UNM at the other end of the floor, with Badon pulling down the rebound with 18 seconds left to play.
New Mexico resorted to fouling the Utes in the final seconds. Whipple hit two free throws to put Utah ahead by three, 52-49 with 12 seconds remaining. Solid defense caused the one Lobo shot at the buzzer to go wide of its mark for a Ute victory.
Sawyer had a season-high 13 points with nine rebounds while Whipple also scored 13 points.
The game was televised locally in Albuquerque and will be aired on The Mtn. at 2:00 p.m. MT on Sunday, Feb. 14.
The Utes return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at UNLV. Tip is at 7:00 p.m. PT.
