Whipple and Sawyer Lead Utes over UNLV, 51-35

LAS VEGAS - With a 13-0 run to start the second half, the Utah women's basketball team defeated UNLV, 51-35. Kalee Whipple led Utah with her sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Halie Sawyer had her third double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
After a slow start in the first half that saw UNLV go up 8-0 before a jumper from Whipple got the Utes on the board with 11:06 on the clock, Utah battled back to tie the game at 17-17 by halftime. Down 15-9 with 5:59 left in the half, Utah closed out the half on an 8-2 run that was sparked by a three-pointer from Rachel Messer. Taryn Wicijowski also hit a layup during the run while Sasha McKinnon's three was the basket to tie the game. Whipple, who is from Hiko, Nev., had seven points and five rebounds by halftime.
Utah's strong run to start the second half paced the Utes the remainder of the way. Sawyer had six points of the 13-0 run to lead Utah. Erica Helms' free-throw with 11:21 left was UNLV's only score of the second half until her layup with 5:40 left.
Utah's largest lead of the game, 20 points, came with 5:49 remaining, 38-18.
The Rebels made a strong push at the end to cut the lead to 10 points with 1:58 left. However, Utah powered back to score eight of the final 10 points of the contest for the 51-35 victory.
Wicijowski had a strong game with seven points and six rebounds while McKinnon hit a pair of three-point buckets for six points. Whipple also had three steals and two blocks for the Utes.
Helms led UNLV with 17 points.
Utah returns to the Huntsman court on Sunday, Feb. 21, against San Diego State at 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on The Mtn.
