SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A late San Diego State run doomed the Utah women's basketball team as the Utes fell 51-42 in San Diego on Wednesday evening.
With the score tied at 39-39 with 8:25 remaining after a pair of free-throws from Taryn Wicijowski, SDSU closed out the game on a 12-3 run in what was a hard-fought battle for both teams.
Wicijowski led the Utes with 16 points while Janita Badon was also in double figure scoring with 13 points. Kalee Whipple had seven points with six rebounds.
Both teams struggled with turnovers. Utah turned the ball over 25 times while SDSU had 21 turnovers. Each team had 11 steals and 26 rebounds.
The Utes had one of their best shooting performances of the season, hitting over 47-percent of their shots from the field, but went just 5-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Utah struggled early as San Diego State took an 11-point lead with 6:22 left in the first half, 23-12. The Utes fought back to come within four points with a 9-2 run, 25-21 with 3:48 left. Badon had five points of the run. SDSU held a 29-25 lead at halftime.
The game remained close in the second half. There were long stretches of play where no points were scored by either team.
SDSU's Jene Morris led all players with 22 points.
