FORT WORTH - San Diego State rallied to score eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 9-8 victory over the Utah baseball team in the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 21.
Utah broke up a no-hitter from SDSU pitcher Jon Berger in the fifth inning, rallying with two outs to take a 5-0 lead. Rick Cornu started the rally when he was hit by a pitch. He moved to second and third after wild pitches, scoring on Cooper Blanc's single. It was the start of four straight hits for the Utes. Corey Shimada and Nick Kuroczko each hit an RBI double in the inning while Tyler Yagi drove in two runners with a single.
Each team scored a run in the sixth inning with Austin Jones scoring on Michael Beltran's hit for Utah and SDSU's Brandon Meredith doubled in the inning before scoring on a ground out to put the score at 6-1.
Utah added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to take an 8-1 lead. Kuroczko led off the seventh inning with a walk before scoring after back-to-back singles from C.J. Cron and Devin Walker. Kuroczko also sent Beltran across the plate in the eighth after a ground out.
San Diego State came back in the bottom of the eighth to score eight runs on six hits and four walks to pull ahead, 9-8. Erik Castro and Ryan O'Sullivan each drove in two runs for the Aztecs.
Andrew Wilding pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs with six strikeouts. Stephen Streich earned the loss to go to 3-2 on the year.
Shimada and Michael Beltran led Utah with two hits.
Erik Castro had two hits and three RBI to lead the Aztecs. Kegan Sharp picked up the win on the mound, pitching the seventh and eighth innings while Addison Reed got his 19th save of the year.
The Utes move into the elimination bracket, facing TCU at 3:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday, May 22. The winner of that game goes on to face San Diego State in the championship game that evening.
