Cron Has Three Hits in Loss to SDSU

OGDEN, Utah - Despite taking an early lead, the Utah baseball team fell to San Diego State, 11-2 on Thursday, May 14.
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning by forcing Cory Vaughn to hit into a double play, Utah took a 2-0 lead off SDSU ace Stephen Strasburg in the bottom of the first. Corey Shimada led off the game with a walk and moved to second on Tyler Yagi's sacrifice bunt. Nick Kuroczko took a 1-2 pitch down the right field line that landed just fair behind the first base bag and went deep into the corner for a triple to send Shimada across the plate. C.J Cron sent Kuroczko home with an infield base hit that was just out of reach of the glove of the diving first baseman.
San Diego State got on the board in the third off Jomel Torres' RBI double to right center and tied the game in the fourth, 2-2, on Brandon Decker's ground out.
Strasburg, who was forced to pitch from behind for just the second time this season, got out of several jams to keep the Utes from crossing the plate the remainder of the way. Cron was stranded on third base in the fourth inning after leading off the inning with a double. Kuroczko and Cron hit back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth and moved to third on a wild pitch, but again, neither runner could add a run to the board. Strasburg struck out 10 batters, which is his second-lowest total of the season and his lowest against a Mountain West Conference team this year.
Cron went 3-for-3 against Strasburg (3-for-4 on the day) while Kuroczko was 2-for-4. Cron is the only person to have three hits in a game off Strasburg this year.
Utah starter Brian Budrow pitched six innings, allowing five runs with six strikeouts in the loss. Greg Krause, Tyler Andersen and Robert Chimpky also pitched. Chimpky allowed just one hit in the final 1.2 innings pitched.
SDSU took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning on Erik Castro's two-run home run and also scored two runs in the seventh before pulling away with a five-run fifth inning.
Utah and San Diego State continue their three-game series on Friday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. at Lindquist Field.
