SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader with Southern Utah on Saturday, winning game one 11-3 and the second game 3-2.
Game one was highlighted by a 19-hit performance, led by Nick Kuroczko's two triples, tying the school record for triples in a game. The feat had not been accomplished since 1985.
With a 3-1 lead after three innings, the Utes broke the game open with a three-run fifth. Austin Jones and Kevin Hussey led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved over on Devin Walker's sac bunt. Austin Jones scored when Gavin Green singled through the right side and Hussey followed on Zach Jones ground out. Michael Beltran sent Green home with a single to right field.
Utah added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth inning.
Kuroczko, Corey Shimada and Hussey were each 3-for-5 on the day. Shimada led Utah with three RBI, which included a two RBI single in the eighth. Seven in the lineup had multiple hits.
Brian Budrow picked up his third win of the year on the mound, going eight innings and striking out five. Tyler Andersen pitched the final inning and struck out one.
In game two, after Southern Utah got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning, the Utes came back to score three in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Kyle Myers hit a one-out double to right field which was followed by an RBI single from Hussey. Josh Reed and Zach Jones each walked to load the bases before Shimada came up with the big hit, singling through the right side to send two runs across the plate.
Utah's Andrew Wilding and SUU's Alec Reichle spent most of the game locked in a pitchers duel. Wilding pitched seven innings and earned his first win of the year (1-3). He struck out three on the day. Stephen Streich entered in the eighth inning while Greg Krause struck out three of the five batters he faced in the ninth and pick up his first save of the year.
"It was nice to win both games of the doubleheader," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We were able to keep the momentum going after scoring 11 runs in the first game, and we held on with three runs in the second game."
The Utes and Thunderbirds play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday, March 29, at 1:00 p.m.
