Utes Fall To SUU in Mid-Week Contest, 6-4

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Ute baseball team dropped its first mid-week game of the season on Tuesday, 6-4, to Southern Utah.
Southern Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly from Bucky Aona, but Utah came back to take a 4-1 lead, scoring runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Devin Walker scored Utah's first run of the game in the third. He led off the inning with a single and scored on Rick Cornu's sacrifice fly. Walker would double to left field in the fourth inning to score Cooper Blanc and give the Utes a 2-1 lead.
Two Ute runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning. Corey Shimada started the two-out rally when he was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, scoring on C.J. Cron's single to right field. Cron advanced two bases on a throwing error, scoring when Tyler Yagi singled through the left side, for a 4-2 lead.
A five-run fifth inning pulled the Thunderbirds ahead for good, 6-4. Marcus Romero led off the inning with a home run to left center and Nick Freitas and Chester Wilson each had RBI hits in the inning.
Utah left 14 runners on base throughout the course of the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and ninth innings. The Utes out-hit Southern Utah, 9-8. Cron, Walker and Austin Jones each had two hits for Utah.
Bryn Card started at pitcher for the Utes, pitching 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Stephen Streich, who picked up the loss on the day, entered in the fifth and went two innings with two strikeouts and allowing two runs, while Greg Krause pitched the final 1.2 innings, striking out two of the five batters he faced.
For SUU, Keli'i Zablan and Nick Freitas each had two hits, while Wilson drove in two runs. Alec Reichle went seven innings on the mound and earned the win.
Utah returns home to Franklin Covey Field on Friday, March 20, to begin a three-game series against TCU.
