Whipple Leads Utes Over South Dakota State, 62-58

SALT LAKE CITY - Behind 25 points from Kalee Whipple, the Utah women's basketball team edged South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon, 62-58, in the Huntsman Center.
For the early part of the game, neither team could gain an advantage as the game was tied nine times. With the score knotted up at 36-36 with 13 minutes left in the second half, Sasha McKinnon hit a three-point basket to start a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to swing the momentum in the Utes' direction for a 43-36 lead. Utah took as much as an 11-point lead as the second half continued.
With three minutes remaining in the game, South Dakota State got aggressive with their pressure to come within two points down the stretch. With Utah up 55-46, SDSU rallied behind Macie Michelson for an 8-2 run, which culminated in Maria Boever hitting one of two free throws to cut the Utah lead to three, 57-54, with just under a minute remaining. A missed three-point bucket by Jill Young with 35 seconds left forced the Jackrabbits to start fouling. Whipple was 4-of-4 down the stretch from the line while Janita Badon also hit a free-throw for the Utes to clinch the victory.
Free-throw shooting was the difference in the game, with Utah going 16-of-21 from the line, while South Dakota State was 6-of-10. The Utes also had 14 second-chance points compared to six by the Jackrabbits.
Whipple had 19 of her 25 points in the second half. Taryn Wicijowski was also in double figure scoring with 10 points. Wicijowski and Halie Sawyer tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. All eight players for the Utes scored at least three points.
Three players scored in double figures for SDSU, led by 13 points by Kristin Rotert. Boever had a team-high seven rebounds.
Utah plays Oregon on Tuesday, Dec. 22, before taking a 10-day break for the holidays.
