SALT LAKE CITY - With three players scoring over 20 points, the Utah women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat Oregon, 89-86, in overtime at the Huntsman Center on Tuesday evening.
Oregon (9-3) maintained a double-digit lead through most of the second half behind nearly 60-percent shooting. Utah (7-4) had its largest deficit of the game (15 points) with six minutes remaining before going on a 19-7 run that was capped by Kalee Whipple's long three-point bucket with two seconds on the clock to tie the game at 80-80 and send it into overtime. Janita Badon had 23 of her career-high 29 points in the second half.
Seven of Utah's nine points in overtime would come from the free-throw line. Although Oregon's Nicole Canepa started the extra stanza with a layup to give the Ducks the lead, the Utes scored six unanswered points to take a four-point lead, 86-82, with a minute remaining. Although the Ducks hit a pair of layups with under 15 seconds left, Whipple made three of four free throws during the same span to help Utah hold on to its lead. Strong defense also sealed the win, as the Utes pulled down eight rebounds and had three blocks in the overtime period.
Whipple had her first double-double of the season with 25 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Taryn Wicijowski, who had 16 first-half points, scored a career-best 23 with seven rebounds. Badon also pulled down nine rebounds.
The Utes held a 48-33 advantage in rebounding and shot over 45-percent from the floor. Utah was also 23-of-34 from the charity stripe.
Amanda Johnson led Oregon with 20 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
Utah will take 10 days off from competition for the holidays. The team returns to the Huntsman court on Saturday, Jan. 2, against SMU.
