FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior outside hitter Cinthia Silva hit a team-high 13 kills and Karolina Bartkowiak came up with her 10th double-double this season but the University of Utah volleyball team dropped a four-set decision Saturday at TCU (21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 7-25) in a Mountain West Conference match at the University Recreation Center.
Utah (15-9, 8-4 MWC) held an 8-7 advantage in team blocks but could only hit for a .170 mark, compared to .313 for TCU.
Silva posted her third consecutive double-figure-kill match with a team-high 13 kills. The San Paulo, Brazil has led or tied for the team lead in kills four times this year.
Karolina Bartkowiak came up with her 10th career double, all coming this season. The Aurora, Ill., native had 11 kills and 10 digs.
Junior setter Stephanie Neeley had her second double-double this season, 13th of her career, with a team-high 22 assists and also had 10 digs. Sophomore Abby Simmons dished out 17 assists
Defensively, libero Keisha Fisher registered her 18th consecutive double-digit-dig performance with a team-high 14 digs. Fisher has led the Utes in digs 22 times this season. The Ririe, Idaho native has reached double figures in digs 56 times in her career and 23 times in 2009.
At the net for the Ute defense, sophomore Jennifer Lanting led the Utes in blocks for the first time in her career with a personal-best five blocks. Lanting also had seven kills on 16 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage. Danielle Killpack and Chelsey Sandberg both posted four blocks apiece.
The first set of the match was even on three occasions through the first eight points but the Horned Frogs took control of the set with a 6-2 run to climb to a 10-6 advantage. The Utes got the first point of the set, but were never able to regain the lead in the set as another 6-2 stretch for TCU gave them its largest lead of the set, five points at 23-18, en route to a 25-21 first-set win. Utah dropped to 7-6 this season when dropping the first set. Silva had four kills in the set while both Sandberg and Bartkowiak had three apiece. The Horned Frogs outhit the Utes, .370 to .235.
TCU crept out to a 3-1 lead at the beginning of the second set but Utah scored back-to-back points to force the first of 14 ties in the set. When the set was tied at 15 points apiece, the Utes went on a 5-0 run but the Horned Frogs came back with a 6-1 stretch to even the set at 21. There would be two more ties, the last being at 24-24, before Utah got kills by Sandberg and Silva to cease a 26-24 victory in the second set to even the match at one set apiece. Bartkowiak totaled five kills and the Utes hit .378 in the set, compared to just a .196 mark.
The teams started evenly early in the third set, as well, but TCU made its move with a 5-1 to move to a 9-5 lead. Utah put together a 5-2 stretch to pull within a point, 11-10 Unfortunately, TCU promptly responded by taking seven of the next 10 points to assume an 18-13 edge. The Horned Frogs would lead by as many as seven points, 21-14, before taking a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-20 third-set victory. Lanting and Silva both recorded four kills but Utah was outhit, .333 to .196, for the set.
Unfortunately, the Horned Frogs came out strong in the fourth set and closed the match by scoring 12 consecutive points for a 25-7 match-clinching win.
TCU (23-5, 12-2 MWC) was led by 17 kills from Kourtney Edwards.
