SALT LAKE CITY - Five softball student-athletes signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period, University of Utah head coach Amy Hogue announced Monday. This is Hogue's third recruiting class since taking over as head coach of the Utes.
Joining the team beginning in the 2010-11 season are Naomi Amu, Taylor Austin, Chalese Fankhauser, Tara Glover and Cheyella Myers. All five student-athletes will enroll at Utah as freshmen next fall.
Naomi Amu (1B-P/Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS/The Next Level)
Two-time participant in the 2007 and 2008 National Elite Futures Camp, also played in the 2008 adidas Futures Top 100 Camp ... led team to CIF San Diego Division I Semifinals ... team went undefeated in Avocado League season in 2008 as well as a Michelle Carew League title ... was named a North County Times Athlete of the Week and All-Avocado League ... helped team qualify for CIF playoffs and earned Second-Team All-Southwestern Conference, All-Riverside County, MVHS Rookie of the Year in 2007 ... club team was a runner-up at the Champions Cup 18 Gold in 2008 and finished seventh at 18 Gold ASA Nationals ... 14U team finished 13th out of 129 at ASA Nationals in 2007, 49th out of 112 in 2006, and 25th in the 2005 U12 division ... Scholar-Athlete award ... History Academic Achievement Award ... 2007 TASK Scholar Winner ... member of Pacific Islander Student Association ... also played varsity volleyball and basketball.
Getting to Know Naomi: Swings a big bat with a lot of power ... very aggressive at the plate ... comes from the perennial power, The Next Level, in Southern California ... prospective pitcher down the road.
Taylor Austin (IF/Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS/Utah Sting)
Second-team all-state selection ... all-state tournament team member ... all-region team honoree ... all-county team ... served as captain of Utah Sting club team ... four-time letterwinner ... fields right and bats left ... also played volleyball and basketball ... academic all-region selection in volleyball as a libero ... recognized on the honor roll and Citizenship Honor Roll ... member of the Service Club.
Getting to Know Taylor: Thinks like a coach ... knows the game well ... has a feel as to where she needs to be on defense ... triple-threat at the plate ... can hit a home run and then lay down a drag bunt for a base hit.
Chalese Fankhauser (C/South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS/Sale Lake Flames)
Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News First-Team All-State selection and first-team all-region as a sophomore ... also on honorable mention and second-team all-region pick as a freshman ... helped Salt Lake Flames to second-place finish at the 2008 Triple Crown World Series ... led Flames to second place in 2008 Triple Crown World Series and a 2005 Western A National Championship ... led Bingham High School to a 5A State Championship in 2008 and was a first-team all-region and all-tournament team MVP as a sophomore ... carries a 3.4 GPA and is interested in studying sports medicine.
Getting to Know Chalese: Told her family that she wanted to be on the Utah Softball team when she was four years old ... gutty player with a `never say die' attitude ... always looking to take the next base ... plays the game hard every single day.
Tara Glover (OF/Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass HS/Northwest Blaze)
State player of the year and conference player of the year and led Grants Pass High School as a 6A state championship as a sophomore ... three-time first-team all-state selection ... three-time first-team all-conference selection ... helped Northwest Blaze to the 2008 16UA national championship.
Getting to Know Tara: Quickest player Hogue has ever signed ... left-handed hitter with power and speed ... range in outfield is incredible ... potential impact player from day one both in the outfield and in the front of the batting lineup ... true `table-setter.'
Cheyella Myers (IF/Taylorsville, Utah/Alta HS/Salt Lake Flames)
Helped Salt Lake Flames win four straight state championships ... led Flames to second place in 2008 Triple Crown World Series ... named one of the top five hitters in Utah by Deseret News ...2008 Offensive Player of the Year ... 2008 Defensive Player of the Year ... won the Rookie of the Year in 2007 ... four-year letterwinner.
Getting to Know Cheyella: Arguably the best prospect in the state ... pure athlete ... strong, quick and powerful ... could be an impact player at almost any position on the field.
