SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team's 2010 schedule features eight games against six opponents who finished the 2009 regular season in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25, including games against two schools who qualified for the Women's College World Series.
Utah went 22-31 overall and 4-10 in the Mountain West Conference in Hogue's second season as head coach.
Utah opens its regular season by playing in five tournaments, beginning at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Feb. 12-14. Utah then travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Feb. 19-21.
The Utes will participate in the Cathedral City Classic Feb. 25-22 in Cathedral City, Calif., a tournament hosted by Oregon State. Utah will face Oregon, Fresno State, Baylor, Long Beach State and UC Davis.
Utah will open its home schedule against South Dakota State Mar. 10 at 4 p.m. MT.
The competition won't get any easier for Utah as it enters a five-game, three-day affair at the Oklahoma University Spring Festival. The Utes open the tournament by facing the host Sooners on Mar. 12. Utah then faces Northern Iowa and Oklahoma for the second time on Mar. 13. The Utes conclude the tournament Mar. 14 against UNI.
Utah then travels to Fullerton, Calif., to face a pair of 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series participants in the Judi Garman Classic, March 18-21. The Utes will face Oklahoma for the third time then take on Michigan, who finished 1-2 in last season's NCAA Women's College World Series, before taking on defending national champion Washington Mar. 20. Utah caps the tournament against San Jose State Mar. 21.
The Utes will stay in Northern California for a pair of doubleheaders, beginning Mar. 23 at UC Riverside then Mar. 25 at Cal State Northridge.
Utah then plays six consecutive games against in-state rivals. The Utes resume their home schedule by entertaining Southern Utah in a doubleheader on March 30 before traveling to Weber State April 2 for a doubleheader. A home doubleheader against Utah Valley on April 3 wraps up the stretch.
The Utes take the lid off the MWC slate on April 9 in a Deseret First Duel doubleheader at BYU. The Utes will play a home doubleheader against Utah State (April 13) and a single game at Utah Valley (May 11) amidst conference action.
