SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team (1-2) fell to Arizona (2-0) Friday night at Ute Field by a 4-0 score. The loss marked the first time since Nov. 11, 2006 that Utah was held scoreless at home.
"I thought after the first 10 minutes we settled in and played a good half," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We moved the ball well, we were crisp in our passing and we were the more aggressive team, we just couldn't score."
The Wildcats got on the board early as Renae Cuellar put them up 1-0 in the second minute of the game. Karina Camacho chipped the ball over the Utah defense and into the penalty box, where Cuellar was able to run onto it and slot it home.
Just seconds before halftime, Utah created a terrific opportunity to even up the game as freshman midfielder Katie Martinez (Littleton, Colo.) struck a long-range left-footed shot, but was thwarted by the crossbar.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, Arizona scored the game's second goal to go up 2-0 after the Utes had changed to a more offensive formation. Taking a risk to try to tie the game, Utah went from four defenders to three, becoming vulnerable in the back. Down 2-0 and desperate for a goal, the Utes continued trying to push forward and ultimately allowed two more Wildcat scores.
"In the second half we broke down and couldn't find a rhythm," said Manning. "We went to three in the back trying to tie up the game and allowed three more goals," said Manning. "We took a risk and paid the price. We haven't trained in that formation at all this year, but we gained valuable experience by playing it tonight and I think that will help us down the road. Arizona is a very good team and we just have to keep learning."
The Utes are back in action at home Sunday, Aug. 31, as they take on No. 19-ranked Georgia at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs come to Ute Field after falling at BYU Friday, 4-1.
