FORT WORTH, Texas - It was a tale of two games as the University of Utah baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to TCU here in league action this afternoon.
TCU belted out five of its eight hits in the first three innings. The Horned Frogs plated all six runs during that span. Utah, which couldn't buy a hit in the first three innings, had seven hits in the last six frames. The Utes scored three runs the rest of the way, but it wasn't enough as TCU rode its efforts from the first three innings for the three-run win.
The Utes (16-23, 5-11 MWC) loaded the bases twice late in the game in trying to stage a comeback. After an RBI single from Cody Guymon, the Utes loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. But Derek VerHagen came on in relief in getting Dustin Hennis to strikeout, ending the seventh.
Utah loaded the bases once again in the eighth, and was able to score one run as a result. With one out on the board, pinch hitter Devin Walker stepped in and hit a deep fly ball to center field. The sac fly plated Austin Jones from third, making the score 6-3.
The Horned Frogs (32-16, 15-5 MWC) chased starting pitcher Brian Budrow from the game in the third frame. In 2.2 innings of work, he gave up five hits, six runs and four walks. Budrow fanned three Horned Frog batters. Budrow is now 4-5 on the season.
Guymon provided the offensive spark for Utah today. He homered for the second time in as many days. He replicated his eighth-inning solo homer from last night, belting a one-out solo shot in the fourth today. He also had a two-out RBI single in the seventh, plating Michael Beltran from second. Guymon led all Utah hitters this afternoon. The designated hitter had three of the seven hits for Utah, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sean Hoelscher got the win on the mound for TCU, upping his season mark to 6-3. He allowed three hits, one earned run and three walks in 6.2 innings of work. Hoelscher fanned eight Utah batters. Andrew Cashner gets the save. TCU held the edge in hits, tallying eight on the day. Bryan Kervin was the only Horned Frog with multiple hits, but Matt Carpenter was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The final game of this three-game conference series is set for tomorrow afternoon. First pitch here at Lupton Stadium is set for 1 p.m. (CT).
