SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team scored two runs with two outs in the fifth inning to rally for the 4-3 win over Utah Valley here this evening.
Utah (11-13 overall) went into the fifth inning trailing, 3-2, but Michael Beltran and Tyler Relf hit back-to-back RBI singles with two down to give Utah the 4-3 lead. Relievers Stephen Streich and Robert Chimpky came on to hold the Wolverines at bay as Chimpky earns his second save of the season.
"Our three pitchers threw very well today," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "They really did a nice job, particularly late in the ball game. I thought Stephen Streich and Robert Chimpky did a good job closing the game for us.
"This was a good win, especially after we lost to them last night. We look forward to playing them again tomorrow night."
Stephen Fife got the win, as threw a six-hit ball game for seven innings. UVU tallied all six of its hits off of Fife as Streich and Chimpky combined for two innings of no-hit ball. Fife struck out five and walked three, and only one of the three runs were earned.
Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to RBI singles by Cody Guymon in the first and Corey Shimada in the second.
But, UVU rallied to plate a run in the third and two in the fourth. But, the two-run fourth inning happened because two costly errors extended the inning for the Wolverines. A two-out, two-RBI single by Jake Rickenbach vaulted the Wolverines into the 3-2 lead.
Utah finally responded in the fifth. Jesse Shriner led the stanza off with a double, and moved to third on a fielder choice to the shortstop by Cooper Blanc. Shriner would then score on Beltran's single through the left side. Blanc would score on the very next at bat when Relf found the gap in left-center field.
That was all Utah would need as it dealt Andy Jangard his second loss of the season. He falls to 0-2 on the year in surrendering four earned runs and nine hits to the Utes. Utah finished the day with 11 hits.
Beltran's 3-for-4, one-RBI effort led the team today.
The same two teams will battle again on Friday night at Franklin Covey Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
