SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah softball team struggled against No. 19 San Diego State, falling in five innings, 13-3, on Ute Field on Friday afternoon.
San Diego State scored six runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third to take a dominant lead.
The Utes scored their first run of the game in the second inning. Kara Foster led off the inning with a double down the left field line. She advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Angie Boardman's single to center field.
Utah added a run in the fourth inning. Kelly Matthews reached base with a bunt single and Tori Medina drew a walk to put two on base. The runners successfully executed a double steal, allowing Matthews to score a few pitches later on a wild pitch.
Diana Phillips capped off the day with a two-out home run over the right center fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was her first home run of the season.
For the Aztecs, Tonye McCorkle went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Erin Floros was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Samantha Beasley was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Utes scattered five hits throughout the game. Brittany Parker started at pitcher and was relieved in the second inning by Haili Squire. Parker falls to 9-12 on the season.
Christina Ross pitched two innings with five strikeouts while Beasley entered in the third inning at pitcher. Beasley earned the win and raises her record to 7-2.
The Utes and Aztecs square off again on Friday, April 26, beginning at 1:00 pm.
