LAS VEGAS - Ashley Smuda threw her second no-hitter of the season as the Utes defeated UNLV, 4-0, in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon.
Smuda struck out five in the win. She raises her record to 13-9 on the year. Smuda also threw a five inning no-hitter on March 11th against Southern Utah.
The Utes (22-19, 5-3 MWC) scored all they would need in the third inning. Sharee Fonoti and Angie Boardman led off the inning with back-to-back singles, with both runners advancing on a wild pitch. Devina Quintero singled to score Fonoti. The bases cleared after a throwing error by UNLV (21-25-1, 1-5 MWC) catcher Laura Briones. The Rebels caught Boardman in a rundown between home and third before Briones threw the ball into left field, allowing both Boardman and Quintero to score.
Utah added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Quintero drew a leadoff walk and was replaced at first by runner Meghan Crouse. Crouse advanced on a ground out, scoring when Staci Hemingway singled to left field.
Fonoti was 2-for-4 in the win. Seven players had at least one hit.
The Utes play a midweek doubleheader against Utah State on Tuesday April 15, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
