SDSU Edges Baseball in Pitcher's Dual

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A pitcher's dual went the way of San Diego State as the University of Utah baseball team fell to the Aztecs in a conference battle here this evening, 1-0.
Neither team could crack its opposing pitcher. That is until the seventh inning when SDSU pushed an unearned run across the plate to make it 1-0.
Utah (13-15 overall, 3-3 Mountain West) let San Diego State load the bases with one out in the seventh. A single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch juiced the bases for Troy Hanzwa. He would hit the ball to third, and it was mishandled, allowing Erik Castro to score from third. Utah did catch Brandon Decker at home trying to score on the play, though.
Stephen Fife got the start on the hill for Utah, and he pitched 6.2 innings of ball. He allowed five hits, four walks and one run. The run was unearned. He fanned five SDSU (19-15, 7-3 MWC) batters in taking the loss. Fife is now 4-3 on the season.
The Aztecs out-hit the Utes, 5-1. The lone hit came off of Michael Beltran's bat in the sixth inning. Beltran got as far as second base when Tyler Relf reached on error. But Aztec hurler Stephen Strasburg struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Utah did threaten in its final at bat. DC Legg led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. He was sacrificed over to second by Corey Shimada. But Strasburg fanned Cody Guymon and Jesse Shriner to end the game.
Strasburg got the complete-game win. He improves to 4-1 on the year, whiffing 23 of 30 batters faced in the victory. The 23 K's was a school and conference record.
All five SDSU hits came off of different bats.
The same two teams will dual again in San Diego on Saturday. First pitch at Tony Gwynn Stadium is set for 1 p.m. (PT).
