SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Utah handed No. 18 San Diego State its first conference loss on Friday, dropping game one in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss before upsetting the Aztecs, 1-0, in game two of the Mountain West Conference doubleheader.
In game one, Megan McDonald's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted SDSU to the 3-2 victory.
Although the Aztecs (30-11, 3-1 MWC) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Utes (20-19, 3-3 MWC) rallied with runs in the third and fourth innings. Angie Boardman hit an RBI single to score Diana Phillips in the third inning after Phillips reached base with a single. In the fourth inning, Devina Quintero led off the inning with a double down the left field line. She scored with Andrea Hoffman's single up the middle two batters later, tying the contest 2-2.
Phillips, Quintero and Hoffman each had two hits in the first game.
Brittany Parker pitched a complete game for the Utes, keeping pace with SDSU ace Christina Ross. Parker struck out five in the loss and falls to 8-10 on the season.
Ashley Smuda had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning in game two before Tonye McCorkle's one-out triple. Although the Aztecs would load the bases on subsequent walks in the inning, Smuda forced Dani Sidoti into a ground out to end the game. She had eight strikeouts and raises her record to 12-9 on the year.
Utah scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning. Kristie Keller hit a two-out double to left field to start the rally. She scored when Hoffman singled to center field. Keller and Phillips led the team with two hits apiece in game two.
The Utes travel to UNLV on Friday, April 11, for the start of a two-day, two-game series.
