CEDAR CITY, Utah - Brian Budrow held Southern Utah University to just five hits, and he fanned 10 batters as the University of Utah blanked the Thunderbirds here this afternoon, 6-0.
It is the second straight win for Utah as the Utes improve to 2-7 on the year. Budrow, who threw for 8.1 innings, didn't walk an opposing batter. He ups his record to 1-1 on the season. The T-Birds stumble to 5-3.
Utah out-slugged its rivals today, 8-5. Cody Guymon and Michael Beltran led the Utes at the plate today, belting out two hits apiece. They were both 2-for-4 at the plate, but Beltran was one of three Utah players with two RBI. Dustin Hennis and Cooper Blanc also had two RBI, both off of third-inning home runs.
The Utes got everything they needed in the third inning. A pair of two-run homers in that inning gave Utah a 4-0 lead. Hennis homered, scoring Jesse Shriner who led the inning off with a single. Austin Jones got hit by a pitch, and he scored when Blanc hit a homer, doubling Utah's lead.
The Crimson and White nearly had another two-run homer in the sixth. With two outs and Corey Shimada on third, Hennis hit another shot over the left field fence. Unfortunately, Matt Sanford reached over the fence to pull it back in to the yard for the third and final out of the inning.
More insurance came in the top of the ninth when Beltran hit a two-run double to gap in left-center field. He plated Devin Walker and Jones to make it 6-0 for the visitors.
Joe Wright and Ray Wright led SUU with a pair of hits today. Alec Reichle is dealt the loss for the Thunderbirds. He's now 0-2 on the young season.
Utah and SUU will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at Thunderbird Park. First pitch is set for noon.
