FRESNO, Calif. - Dustin Hennis hit a grand slam home run in going 5-for-5 with seven RBI this afternoon, helping the University of Utah baseball team race past Portland here in the first game of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Tournament, 18-1.
The Utes (4-7 overall) had as many hits as runs today, out-slugging the Pilots, 18-7. Hennis was Utah's top hitter with his 5-for-5 performance, but he was one of just four Ute hitters with multiple hits today. Both Corey Shimada and Cody Guymon were 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI today.
Andrew Wilding hurled the Utes to victory, as the Pilots fall to 10-5 on the season. Wilding struck out three, walked three and he allowed five hits. He improves to 2-0 on the season.
"We swung the bat well, especially early in the game," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "We are hitting a lot of line-drive doubles, and you know you're hitting the ball well when you're putting a lot of line drives in play.
"Dustin Hennis hit very, very well for us today, and he had a lot RBI. But, we have to give credit to the hitters before him because they did a good job of getting on so Dustin could hit them home.
"I can't complain about the pitching over the last three games. Andrew Wilding threw five very good innings, and that allowed us to swing the bats freely. It was a solid showing, and Stephen Streich and Geoff Wolfgramm came out of the bullpen and held Portland at bay."
The Utes belted out nine hits in the first two innings of play, allowing them to jump out to a 6-0 lead on the Pilots. A one-out, two-RBI single to center field by Austin Jones put Utah on the board in the first inning.
It plated the next four runs in the second inning, starting with Shimada's RBI triple to score Nick Kuroczko. Back-to-back-to-back doubles plated the next three runs of the inning. Guymon's double scored Shimada, Jesse Shriner's double scored Guymon and Hennis' double plated Shriner. All of that gave Utah an insurmountable 6-0 lead.
Portland's lone run of the ballgame came in the bottom of the second, off of a solo home run. But, it was all the Pilots had, leaving pitcher Brian Yoakum to take the loss.
Michael Beltran's RBI single in the fifth scored another two run for Utah, and the team went on to score in each of the last three innings to dispense of its opponents today.
The Utes return to the diamond tomorrow at 10 a.m., to play Gonzaga in the second game of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Tournament in Fresno, Calif.
