SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team spotted San Jose State a three-run lead in the first inning, and the Utes couldn't recoup as the Spartans ran away with the 10-4 non-conference win this afternoon.
The top three of Utah's (0-3 overall) batting order had four of the team's nine hits this afternoon. But, it was the Nos. 5 and 7 batters who led the offense. Cody Guymon went 3-for-4 at the plate today while Austin Jones was 2-for-4.
Guymon and Jesse Shriner were the lone Utes with extra-base hits this afternoon. Both of them had doubles, while Shriner's two-bagger also came with an RBI.
San Jose State raced out of the starting blocks as the first three batters all tallied hits off of Utah starter Kerr Foster. A leadoff double, and an ensuing single, put runners on the corners for SJSU. That led to an RBI single and the game's first run. Then a bases-loaded fielder's choice plated two more runs to give the home team a 3-0 lead after one inning
Foster only went three innings and gave up five earned runs and seven hits. He was saddled with the loss, falling to 0-1 this season.
Utah responded with runs in the third and fourth innings. But, by the end of the fourth frame, the Spartans had a commanding 7-2 lead. An error by the San Jose State second baseman allowed Corey Shimada to score an unearned run in the third. Meanwhile, the run in the fourth came off of Jones' RBI single, scoring Cooper Blanc.
Shriner belted an RBI double in the fifth inning to score Shimada, and Shriner scored later that frame on Guymon's RBI single to short. It put the Utes back within three, 7-4, after four-and-a-half innings.
However, SJSU hung a three-spot on the board in the fifth to seal the six-run win.
The same two teams will close-out the four-game season-opening series on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (PT).
