LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah outside hitter Kathryn Haynie notched the 18th double-double of her career, her sixth this season, to lead the No. 24 University of Utah volleyball team to a 3-1 win at UNLV (25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19) Saturday at the Cox Pavilion.
Utah (19-5, 11-2 MWC) outhit the Rebels .274 to .162 in the match while hitting better than .210 in each of the final three sets, all victories for the Utes. Meanwhile, the Rebels hit .255 in the opening set, but couldn't hit above .200 for the remainder of the match.
"This afternoon was a really tough match for us," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "But we got a lot of big-time performances from a lot of different people. Lori [Baird] played really well for us today. Anytime you can get a hitting percentage like that, you know you're playing well."
The Utes have won 12 of their last 13 matches and are currently on an 11-match conference win streak and have not lost an MWC match since Sept. 20. This is Utah's longest league winning streak since going 19-0 from Nov. 24, 2005 to Sept. 13, 2007.
Haynie turned in 10 kills and 10 digs to post an impressive all-around performance in the win. Utah's starting setter Stephanie Shardlow had a team-high 28 assists and also came through with 13 digs to achieve a double-double. Freshman Abby Simmons split the setting duties with Shardlow and was credited with 24 assists.
Baird led Utah in kills with a match-high 17 kills at a .516 clip and only one attack error in 31 swings. Baird also had a match-high eight blocks, while both Emillie Toone and Karolina Bartkowiak turned in seven block assists apiece. Toone also chipped in 12 kills with a .476 hitting percentage. Chelsey Sandberg added six block assists to go along with nine kills on 22 swings for a .273 hitting percentage.
Utah outblocked UNLV 15-8 with four different Utes getting at least six blocks. In the back row, libero Keisha Fisher had a match-high 18 digs.
The Utes are now 3-5 this season after dropping the first set of a match, including victories in three of the last four such situations. Utah is 2-0 this year when ranked among the top 25 of the Bison/AVCA Coaches Poll.
UNLV (14-12, 7-6 MWC) was led offensively by Cursty Jackson and Sara Nehf, who tallied 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Jackson posted a team-high .267 hitting percentage.
Utah takes on BYU in the second match of the Deseret First Duel Friday at Crimson Court. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. MDT and will be broadcast live on the mtn.
