BOISE, Idaho - The Utah women's swimming and diving team started its weekend with a pair of victories Friday. Going up against a fledgling Boise State team and #24 (collegeswimming.com) Washington, the women earned a 175-66 win against Boise State and upset 24th-ranked Washington, 134-101.
With all three teams competing at the same time, freshman Whitney Lopus finished first in the 200 free and 100 fly. Fellow freshman Hannah Caron won the 100-meter free with a time of 51.5 and sophomore Natalie Edge won the 50-meter free. Lopus lead the way with four wins overall, including relays, quickly followed by Caron with 3 overall wins.
"This is the biggest win I've seen since I've been on campus," head coach Greg Winslow said.
The men finished the night losing 143-72 to Washington. Winning for the the Utes was Eric Bonnicelli, who placed first in the 500-meter free and the 400-meter IM. John Baque finished with a time of 57.7 in the 100 breast, a mere hundredths of a second off of his personal best.
Both teams will compete tomorrow. The women will have to be ready for a revenge-minded Washington team. "We won't be to take Washington by surprise next time," Winslow said, "We'll find out what our character is about with another day of competition."
The meet starts tomorrow at noon in Boise.
