"It was a lot closer this time, "head coach Greg Winslow said. "They took their best lineup and came after us and we flat out beat them." The women's team also defeated Boise State a second time this weekend, 197-84.
Freshman Whitney Lopus had another great meet, finishing first in the 100 free, 100 fly, and the 200 fly. Hannah Caron also had another impressive performance, winning the 200 breast, 200 IM, and the 200 free. The divers for Utah stepped up Saturday, placing first and second in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Anna Braszkiwiecz finished in the first-place spot and Queenie Yu was in second. Maiya Otsuka rounded out the top finishes for the team, taking first in the 100 breast.
"We're keeping our sights on the end of the year," Winslow said. "But right now we're off to a great start at 4-0."
The men made things a lot more interesting against the Huskies on Saturday, but they eventually lost, 149-125, a much smaller margin than Friday's result. George Evans was the lone first-place finisher for the team, winning the 100 free. The rest of the team performed very well, as well. Vlas Lezin in the 200 back and 200 IM and John Baque in the 200 breast, both placed second in individual standings and came close to breaking personal records.
The Utes will have another big meet this week, as they head to California, next Saturday to take on San Diego State in the first conference match-up of the season. Swimming starts at 2 p.m. MT.
