PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team scored the first four runs of Thursday night's game at BYU. Unfortunately for the Utes, the Cougars scored the final five runs and took a 5-4 victory in Mountain West Conference action.
Utah (24-27, 12-10 MWC) took advantage of three BYU errors in the first inning and rapped out three hits to jump on top 4-0. But Cougar pitchers Jesse Craig and Matt Jensen didn't allow the Utes another run for the final eight frames.
The contest was decided in the bottom of the seventh. With the score deadlocked at 4-4, BYU's Kent Walton homered to deep center field off Ute reliever John James, putting the Cougars on top 5-4.
BYU (33-18, 15-7 MWC) got three runs off Utah starter Stephen Fife in the second inning to pull within one, 4-3. Fife got out of a jam in the fourth and kept his team in the lead until the sixth. But Cougar catcher J.T. Musso walked and later scored on a Dan Vargas double to tie the contest at 4-4 and set up Walton's game-winning dinger.
James (0-3) suffered the loss for Utah. Craig (10-2) tossed seven strong innings to take the victory for BYU. Matt Jensen pitched the final two innings for his third save of the season. He struck out four of the six Utah batters he faced and got a double play to erase the only hit he allowed.
The victory clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MWC Tournament for BYU.
Friday's second game of the series is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Miller Field.
