RENO, Nev. - A pair of grand-slam home runs powered the University of Utah softball team (19-12-1 overall) to an 11-0 (five innings) win over Saint Mary's here on the final day of the Nevada Tournament.
Tori Medina hit a grand slam in the top of first to give Utah a 5-0 lead. Kara Foster was equal to the task in the fifth inning, with her effort racing Utah's lead out to 11-0. The Gaels stumble to 15-21 on the year, having lost five in a row.
"I think that the team is leaving today's game with a good feeling, offensively," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "I think that we did well this weekend and I'm glad that the team will enter conference play next weekend on a positive note."
Ute hurler Meghan Dyer got the start for the Utes and she went three innings. She left the game when it was 11-0. Dyer fanned seven Gael batters and allowed only one hit today. Dyer is now 13-7 on the year. Haili Squire came on to finish the game for Dyer, pitching two innings of shutout ball.
Utah finished with seven hits in all this morning. Leading Utah's offensive output today was Foster. She was 2-for-2 with six RBI and three runs scored. Medina was the only other Ute with multiple hits. She was 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Already up 1-0 in the top of the first, Medina hit a grand-slam homer to boost the Utes' lead up to 5-0. Foster made it 6-0 with a solo shot of her own in the third.
With runners on first and second in the fifth, Hailey Davenport tallied an RBI single that scored Matthews. Diana Phillips walked on the very next at-bat to load the bases for Foster who cleared the sacks with her grand slam poke.
SMC's Marlena Green gets the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year. The team only managed one hit on the day, coming from Sandra Ruezga's double in the third inning.
League play is up next for the Utes as it all begins when they play at UNLV and San Diego State next weekend.
