PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Utah baseball team got strong pitching from Chad Cullers and Brad DeVore Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel field. That performance, along with a big effort at the plate from first baseman Jay Brossman, led Utah to an 8-3 win over Portland.
The victory also gave Utah (6-14) its third series win of the season. The Utes also picked up their second straight overall win and second consecutive series victory.
DeVore started the game on the mound for Utah. He allowed two runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. Cullers (1-4) tossed the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run to pick up his first victory of the season. Combined, DeVore and Cullers struck out five Pilot batters, while allowing just two bases on balls.
Brossman was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Utes, driving in three runs and scoring a pair to lead the Utah offense. Brossman's day included a three-run home run. Center fielder Nate Burnham was also 3-for-4 for Utah, scoring twice.
Utah jumped on top 2-0 in the first. Right fielder John Welsh laced a run-scoring triple to right field in the frame. Chase Powell put Portland (10-9) on the board in the bottom of the fourth, knocking a solo home run off DeVore to cut the Utes' lead in half. Both teams put up a single tally in the fifth, leaving Utah with a 3-2 advantage.
Utah broke things open in the sixth. Third baseman Erich Kemp led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Then -- with two runners on -- Brossman hammered his fifth home run of the season. The three-run shot to left-center put Utah on top 7-2.
Mike Mitchell's RBI single in the seventh put Utah on top 8-2. Portland pushed a single run home in the bottom of the inning. But that was all Cullers would allow the Pilots, as Utah cruised home to the 8-3 victory.
Portland threw five pitchers against the Utes. But it was Sean Sargent, who was saddled with the loss. He tossed five innings and allowed half of the Utes' eight runs. Three Pilot hitters had two hits, accounting for six of Portland's 10. But only two of those 10 hits went for extra bases, as DeVore and Cullers limited what the Pilots were able to do offensively.
Utah is back in action again Tuesday night, hosting BYU in a 6 p.m., non-conference game at Franklin Covey Field.
