OREM, Utah - Defense was the name of the game here this afternoon as the University of Utah (13-7-1 overall) and Utah Valley State softball teams engaged in a pitchers' dual. The Utes eked out the 2-0 win.
The first hit of the game didn't even come until the bottom of the fourth. UVSC's (8-12) Lindsay Dyer broke up Meghan Dyer's no-no bid with a bloop single to left field. Meghan Crouse's RBI single in the top of the fifth broke up UVSC's Corie Jensen's no-hit effort.
Utah finished with two hits on the day while the hosts ended up with three.
"I was disappointed that we didn't come out with the same energy that we had in the games leading up to today's with Utah Valley State," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "However, I was proud of how this team chipped away and made the necessary adjustments at the plate so that we could come away with a victory."
The win is the fourth straight for Utah softball.
Utah's Dyer finished with the victory in the circle, improving to 10-4 on the season. She allowed one hit and four walks while fanning four UVSC batters. Karina Cannon came on in relief to pitch the last three innings.
It was a costly UVSC error and a passed ball in the fifth inning that allowed Utah to break the scoreless tie.
With one out, Andrea Hoffman hit a ground ball to short with Tori Medina on first. The shortstop opted to go to second base for the force out, but the Wolverine second baseman dropped the ball. Kelly Matthews sacrificed the two runners over a base and then Medina scored on a wild pitch. Hoffman scored later on in the inning on Crouse's RBI single to right field.
Hailey Davenport had the only other hit for Utah today. She doubled down the left field line in the sixth inning.
Jensen took the loss for UVSC, falling to 3-4 on the season. None of the runs allowed were earned. UVSC's three hits came from three different bats.
Utah returns to action this weekend when it plays at the Aztec Classic in San Diego. First pitch is against Miami this Friday at 2 p.m. (PDT).
